Introduction to the Awards
The Singapore Environmental Achievement Awards (SEAA) scheme is organised by the Singapore Environment Council (SEC).
SEAA is one of the most prestigious environmental award in Singapore and the region today. It recognises overall environmental stewardship by organisations and is in support of the Sustainable Singapore Movement, which seeks to rally and inspire everyone to do their part and take action towards environmental initiatives. It is through ground-up projects and involvement of the community and partners that will move us towards a truly Sustainable Singapore.
Since its inception, 123 awards have been given out to organisations of different industries. Companies that are recognised by the SEAA join an elite pool of organisations from the region that have affirmed their commitment to environmental excellence and protection of the natural environment.
The criteria for the SEAA focuses on assessing the leadership displayed by the company, the real environmental improvements made as well as the ability of an organisation to establish procedures, train staff and innovate in order to achieve breakthroughs in environmental performance. This is also in line with the Sustainable Singapore’s theme of ‘A Leading Green Economy’.
The Awards Scheme
The SEAA was officially launched by the then Minister for the Environment, Mr. Yeo Cheow Tong in November 1997, with the primary objective of promoting a higher level of environmental awareness among industries.
Over the last decade or so, corporate environmental management has changed significantly. In the mid to late 1990’s, only a few organisations were implementing environmental practices and these tended to take a sporadic approach to the environment. Presently, many organisations have implemented sustainability or corporate social responsibility (CSR) strategies, and report publicly on environmental performance and more significantly, go above and beyond legal requirements.
Through the awards scheme, SEC aims to continue to increase the level of environmental performance and awareness amongst organisations operating in Singapore. It also aims to encourage industries to adopt a more proactive approach towards managing the environment by identifying positive examples through the respective SEAA winners for organisations to emulate. This is in support of the Sustainable Singapore Blueprint (SSB) 2015 which outlines our national vision and plans for a more liveable and sustainable Singapore, to support the diverse needs and growing aspirations of Singaporeans. This blueprint is a plan for action involving organisations, the community and Government, and provides all of us a unique opportunity to work together to create a better home, a better environment, and a better future that we can all be proud of.
SEAA recognises and rewards organisations that have exemplary environmental practices. The award criteria looks into five key aspects:
- Systems and Management
- Leadership & Advocacy
These criteria are the building blocks of a pyramid of sound environmental practice and achievement. At the base are minimal expectations which move up to the leadership element which demonstrates an organisation’s depth of commitment and understanding in the environmental sphere.
